Diet for Constipation: The 3 Elements to Help

Chronic constipation affects millions of people.  Lives are affected when time after time, events are cancelled, plans are changed and appointments at work are missed because of the excruciating pain and bloating.

Many laxatives are harsh and leave the person suffering more; a diet for chronic constipation is the only real solution. Several factors need to be included:

  • Fibre

A diet for constipation needs to be high in fibre.  A lot of chronic cases can be attributed to the typical diet.  We’ve replaced so much of our natural food sources with unnatural junk that we’ve lost a lot of the natural fibre that we should be eating.

Fibre works in two ways.  Fibre is the indigestible portion of plants that aids in elimination via two ways.  For one, soluble fibre found in fruits and vegetables helps the stool absorb water which makes the stool softer and easier to eliminate.

Insoluble fibre in a diet for chronic constipation works to bulk the stool which increases peristalsis.  Insoluble fibre is found in whole grains and some vegetables.

So a diet of this kind will contain whole grains carbohydrates rather than refined sugars.  A diet for constipation will also contain plenty of fruits and vegetables.

  • Antioxidants

All of these fruits and vegetables provide something else.  A diet for chronic constipation needs to have plenty of phytochemicals and antioxidants.  Phytochemicals and antioxidants supply our body with the ability to fight free radical damage.

You’re probably wondering what this has to do with a diet of this kind.  People with chronic constipation haven’t been absorbing nutrients as well as possible.  They suffer from symptoms like fatigue and excessive illnesses due to the poor condition of their bodies because of chronic constipation.

As well, faecal matter may be lining the colon that can be harbouring all sorts of toxins and parasites.  It’s imperative that a diet for chronic constipation include a way to heal the body and promote optimum nutrition.

A diet for constipation needs to be high in lean protein.  Food high in fat can cause real problems.  As well, protein helps the body heal and repair itself.  Lean proteins like poultry, fish and leaner cuts of beef and pork can be found in a diet like this.

  • Realistic

Most important of all, a diet for chronic constipation needs to work with today’s busy lifestyles.  If an eating plan is too difficult to follow or isn’t simple enough to follow, then it won’t be utilised.

In order for a diet to assist with this, it needs to be flexible and simple.  It shouldn’t involve calorie counting.  It shouldn’t have too many restrictions.  The food in a diet for chronic constipation needs to be highly flavourful and easy to prepare.
