Healthy lunches – Quick fixes for “healthier” healthy lunches
Have you been wondering what to eat for lunch? Finding healthy lunches can be
difficult. We know running through the
fast food drive-up and having a burger and fries for lunch isn’t good for
us. Easy to do, tastes fantastic, but
not good for us!
There are a lot of foods touted as being healthy lunches,
and some of them are fairly healthy, yet loaded in calories. Let’s look over some healthy lunches that are
a bit too high in calories as well as some suggestions on how you can improve
the healthy lunches.
Salads are thought of as healthy lunches. Most salads do in fact contain plenty of
vegetables to make them healthy lunches.
They probably also contain protein which is great too!
- However,
what kind of protein sources does it contain? Are they high in fat? As well, what kind of dressing does it
contain? Creamy and high in fat
also?
- A
salad that starts out as one of the healthy lunches can easily be made
fattening when high fat proteins are used such as ground beef in a taco
salad or fried chicken in a crispy chicken salad.
- Creamy
dressings can really pack on the calories.
Believe it or not, some salads can cost you as many calories as a
cheeseburger and French fries. Some
salads can be well over 500 calories and suddenly, they don’t seem like
healthy lunches at all.
- Instead,
start with the veggies lots of them.
Next, add in grilled fish of any sort or grilled marinated
chicken. It’s even perfectly
acceptable to use grilled beef that is of a leaner variety.
- When
topping your salad with some flavour, drop the creamy stuff and use
flavour that won’t cost you any calories.
Salads that serve as healthy lunches can be flavoured with lemon
juice, vinegars, vinaigrettes, pepper sauces as well as other vegetables
that are more flavourful such as peppers and onions.
Another choice for healthy lunches is a turkey
sandwich. You have to be careful,
though, because if you use low quality turkey coupled with white bread and mayo,
suddenly it isn’t one of the healthy lunches anymore.
Healthy lunches need to be low in calories and high in
nutrition. Cheap turkey slices can be
high in fillers and water and not have a lot of nutritional value. White bread is purely about calories and some
wheat breads are merely coloured white bread.
- Instead,
in order to make your turkey sandwich one of the healthy lunches, you need
to use a good quality turkey and whole grain bread. Use one piece of bread and eat your
sandwich open faced to save on calories.
Flavour your sandwich with vinegar and add some veggies like
tomato, arugula, onions and herbs.
- There
are plenty of healthy lunches out there, but not all of them are created
equally. Some are healthy, but just
a bit too high in calories. There
are some great diets that can offer up even more suggestions for eating
healthfully throughout the day.
