How to lose junk food forever!

It’s tough to resist junk especially when it’s being thrown at you from every angle in the marketing world. The next time you watch television, count how many commercials are about junk. It’s no wonder why we crave the stuff!

Not only do we succumb to mouth-watering commercials, but we also tend to eat what we’re trained to eat. If your taste buds are accustomed to chips and greasy, dressing soaked burgers, a plate of veggies probably doesn’t sound too appealing. This is because of all the fat, salt and sugar content in all of that junk. And it’s easy to get your fix. Junk food seems so much more convenient than cutting up a bunch of veggies and it’s available at every corner! When was the last time you pulled into a fast food joint and saw broccoli on the side order menu? The good news is that you can change what you crave and you can make healthy eating more convenient. And you should! Let’s look at what all that junk is doing to your body.

Weight Gain!

First of all, the junk has a far greater potential to cause weight gain. There’s a reason you can easily eat 700 calories worth of chips in about ten minutes or less but you couldn’t possibly eat 700 calories worth of leafy greens in even an hour. The junk is extremely high in fat which is more calorically dense than the leafy greens. Without getting too technical, fat carries more calories per gram. The point is, when we eat junk, we can eat a lot in a little bit of time and therefore, the tendency to overeat is far greater.

Disease!

Secondly, all of that saturated fat in junk food diets has a serious ability to cause disease in the form of cardiovascular disease, type II diabetes and even some types of cancer to name a few. Eating all of that junk takes away from eating more healthful items which means we are nutritionally depriving our bodies of immunity boosters. We get sick more often when we eat mostly junk.

Fatigue!

Eating all of that sugar has a roller coaster effect on your body. The sugar gives your body jolts of energy that last briefly but has no staying power. By the day’s end, you can’t face the gym because you’re too tired. Do you see the vicious cycle? You’re heavy because of what you eat and you can’t do anything about it because you’re too tired to exercise! I know, I know: “But I love junk food! I need it! I can’t trade my French fries for broccoli!” I understand! Truly though, you only think you can’t. This is what you’ve eaten for years and it may seem impossible to switch to a healthier diet. Let’s look at all the benefits of a healthy diet devoid of all that junk.

Weight Loss!

Healthier foods like vegetables and lean protein have fewer calories. You get fewer calories yet more nutrients and you have less of a tendency to overeat. It’s difficult and nearly impossible to overeat vegetables. You chew them longer and it takes more of them to make up the same amount of calories. A box full of veggies and lean protein will last you all day. Try making a fast food meal last all day! Do you see how much easier it is to eat less calories by eating healthier items?

Disease Prevention!

More healthful eating has been shown to reduce cardiovascular disease, reduce type II diabetes and reduce the risk of many types of cancer. It seems every month, scientists and researchers are uncovering yet another nutrient found in healthy food that will counteract disease. People who consume healthier diets see far less illnesses per year than people who consume junk.

Energy!

Lean proteins combined with vegetables have staying power! Whereas sugar runs right through the body and gives you a short burst of energy, the complexity of protein and the fibrous nutrient packed vegetables keep you going all day! You’ll be ready to hit the gym, not the floor!

All of the above is yours for the taking if you do one simple thing. Start switching out your junk for healthier foods. With minimal effort, you can make all those great healthy foods convenient and easier to grab out of the fridge than saying “Yes, I will take fries with that.”
